TMJ Treatment in Downtown Edmonton
What is TMJ? What causes TMD?
Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. Problems with your jaw and the muscles in your face that control it are known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). If this joint is stressed, it can become inflamed and sore. The inflammation can also interfere with the function of your jaw, causing difficulty chewing and swallowing.
There are a lot of things that can cause the joint to become inflamed, such as stress, misaligned or crooked teeth, chewing gum, and grinding your teeth.
How is TMD diagnosed and treated?
We diagnose TMD by examining your jaw. Common symptoms include soreness around the joint, popping or clicking sensations, headaches and difficulty chewing. We may take X-rays of your jaw to identify any alignment issues that may be causing inflammation.
TMD is treated by reducing the inflammation and the factors that are causing it. Treatments can include physiotherapy, massage, medication, stretches and exercise, and orthodontic correction of alignment issues.
